James Clemens, Bob Jones and Madison Academy each advanced to the North Super Regional of the state volleyball playoffs. The 16-team two-round event will take place Friday and Saturday in Huntsville.
All three teams won their respective area tournament games held on Oct. 18. Tournament winners and runners-up advance to the super regional.
Of the three teams, James Clemens’ appearance is likely the most impressive. In its inaugural season, the Jets won the regular-season Class 6A, Area 15 championship.
As region champions, they hosted and won their area tourney by beating Austin 3-0 in the final. The Jets will play Hewitt-Trussville on Court 6 at 4:15 p.m. Friday.
“We are so excited to reach the Super Regional,” James Clemens coach Amanda Smith said. “It’s not going to be easy.”
Smith said she had not seen Hewitt-Trussville play this season in person or on film. She is, however, aware of the level of talent on the Hewitt-Trussville roster.
“I know that they always have athletes,” Smith said.
Regardless of Friday’s outcome with Hewitt-Trussville, James Clemens should be well prepared for the contest.
“We had a really good practice today,” Smith said on Monday.
Another asset for the Jets should be their serving. Smith commended her team for its improvement in that area since the start of the season. She credited the improved serving for sparking them to the area tournament title.
“Our serving has gotten substantially better,” Smith said.
Ninth-ranked Bob Jones won the Class 6A, Area 15 tournament by beating host Buckhorn 3-2 in the area final. The Patriots will face Mountain Brook on Court 5 Friday at 6:45 p.m.
Third-ranked Madison Academy hosted the Class 3A, Area 15 tournament and beat West Morgan in the final. The Mustangs are scheduled to play Geraldine on Court 3 at 12:45 p.m. Friday.
