Madison Academy continues to win, and win big.
The Mustangs beat Plainview 42-7 for their seventh straight win and reached the Class 3A state quarterfinals.
Kerryon Johnson and Malik Miller scored two touchdowns each in the win.
Miller led the Mustangs with 126 yards rushing and Johnson added another 110 yards on the ground.
Madison Academy will host Region 8 rival Colbert County for the second time this season. Colbert County advanced by beating Sylvania 14-7.
Madison Academy coach Eric Cohu expects Colbert County to make several key adjustments from the teams’ last meeting. The Mustangs cruised to a 42-0 win at Colbert County on Oct. 26.
“I think they will try to burn the clock (on offense) and be very aware of the deep ball (on defense),” Cohu said.
Madison Academy and Colbert County were not the only Region 8 teams to reach the quarterfinals. Lauderdale County and Deshler also advanced. Deshler beat Piedmont 28-6 and Lauderdale County prevailed over Geraldine 33-10.
The region rivals are a combined 8-0 in the playoffs through two weeks, but two of them will see their seasons end on Friday. Deshler will travel to Lauderdale County Friday.
“Our region has proven it is the toughest in 3A,” Cohu stated. “We’re hoping that (experience) will help us.”
Bob Jones falls short of quarterfinals, 14-13, to Mountain Brook
A missed an extra point and a missed late field goal proved costly for the Patriots as they saw their season end at 8-4.
Bob Jones coach Kevin Rose said before the season that the 2012 Patriots were not as talented as previous Bob Jones squads but worked as hard if not harder than those teams. Bob Jones overcame a 2-2 start and losing 42-14 at Hazel Green to win six straight games and win its fourth straight region title.
