Madison Academy finished the regular season strong after a grueling three-week stretch that included losing seven of 10 games and starting point guard Kerryon Johnson for the season.
The Mustangs (16-12, 4-2 in Class 3A, Area 15) won its final two regular season games over Class 2A, top-ranked Tanner and Class 6A power Sparkman.
MA outscored visiting Tanner 24-11 in the second quarter and padded the lead late in a 67-44 blowout victory on Feb. 2. Josh Langford, who has played more minutes at the point in Johnson’s absence, led MA with 29 points and 12 rebounds.
“He’s obviously a phenomenal talent,” MA coach Andy Blackston said.
Two days later, the Mustangs stunned Sparkman 63-49 on the Senators’ home floor. MA led 20-10 after the first quarter to set the tone in the win. Langford, Chandler Trach and Colby Crossfield each had 13 points in the upset win.
“I’m really encouraged,” Blackston said. “It’s been a long road for us. These guys have never stopped working hard.”
The Area 15 regular-season runners up appear to be peaking at the right time as they prepare to open area tournament play at West Morgan High on Friday.
MA will play Westminster Christian at 5:30 p.m. The Mustangs swept Westminster in their two meetings.
A Mustangs win would pit them against the West Morgan/Elkmont winner Monday at 7 p.m.
Class 3A, third-ranked MA (22-8, 6-0) won 13 of its final 16 regular season games. The Area 15 tourney host Mustangs will open Thursday at 7 p.m. against Elkmont.
