Class 6A, No. 6 Bob Jones secured second place in Area 15 by crushing third-place and ninth-ranked Buckhorn 48-18 on Jan. 25.
Bob Jones improved to 24-4 overall and 4-2 in the area while Buckhorn fell to 18-7 and 2-4. Chandler Elder led the Lady Patriots with 11 points.
The teams will meet Feb. 7 in the area tournament semifinal.
With the win, Bob Jones rebounded from a 39-31 loss on Jan. 22 at then-10-ranked Huntsville.
“We shot the ball well against Buckhorn,” Bob Jones coach Danny Petty said. “We’ve been kind of streaky.”
Bob Jones’ solid defensive play has been a constant in the team’s wins. With the postseason about to begin, Petty said not to expect many major changes on either end of the court.
“You’ve got to be sharp and be ready to play,” he said. “It’s about getting mentally ready to play.”
Despite struggling to score in several games, Bob Jones’ offense is capable of making enough plays to win. Petty said the addition of Chloe Long after the fall semester added much needed size and an inside scoring presence to complement the team’s perimeter shooting.
“We’ve got good spot-up shooters and good penetrators,” Petty said. “We’ve got a little quickness.”
Bob Jones will travel to Austin on Friday and will host Grissom on Monday to finish the regular season.
“That’s going to be a good test,” Petty said of the Austin game.
Bob Jones finished in fourth place in Area 15 and will play Sparkman when the area tournament opens on Feb. 8. Sparkman swept the Patriots 60-45 on Dec. 14 and 50-46 on Jan. 4.
